Petition to Reprioritize Street Improvements 2900 Block of Fenwick Road, Lawrence, KS
The Issue
Pavement Status - 2900 Block of Fenwick Road
As a resident of the 2900 block of Fenwick Road, I am very concerned with the quickly disintegrating asphalt and concrete. The street, curbs, gutters and driveway approaches are dangerous to pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. I twisted an ankle in a pothole in the gutter near the community mailbox and I had a family member ruin a tire pulling into our driveway as I was loading my truck. I heard the tire pop and it quickly went flat due to a tread separation. Many vehicles scrape when entering/exiting their driveways due to the loss of concrete and asphalt at and in front of the gutter area and this pavement condition is damaging to the undercarriage, suspension and alignments of our vehicles.
I checked the City’s website to see the plan for our block and summarized that information with links to the web documents and included one photo of many that I took showing the deterioration we are experiencing.
The 2020 PCI Pavement Condition Map shows the results of a condition analysis performed in 2020, along with an explanation of scores. In 2020 our street was rated at the lowest rating in the “poor” category. (You will need to zoom into our neighborhood on this map.)
“Poor (PCI 40-54): Pavement has low-, medium- and high-severity distresses. Near-term maintenance and repair needs may range from rehabilitation up to reconstruction.
The Future Street Maintenance Plan shows maintenance on our block is not planned until 2028 and that we will only need crack seal. There is not an updated analysis on the website since 2020 and the 2900 block of Fenwick Road is well beyond needing a crack seal today in July of 2024! (You will need click the layers button in the upper right corner and click 2028 to see the plan for our street on this map.)
With this information we urgently petition the City of Lawrence Kansas to review the condition of the 2900 block of Fenwick as soon as possible and accelerate the plan to reconstruct our street and driveway approaches. Our block is by far the worst condition in the neighborhood.
