We are deeply concerned about a waterpipe in our locality that has been bursting on a monthly basis, leaving residents without water for an average of two days each time.

This situation is unacceptable and must be urgently rectified.

Access to clean water is a basic human right recognized by international law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. By failing to maintain a functioning water supply system and lacking necessary spares to address these bursts promptly, the local water department is in direct violation of our fundamental human rights.

The recurrent bursting of this waterpipe not only disrupts our daily lives but also subjects us to unnecessary hardships and risks. The denial of water for extended periods affects our ability to meet our basic needs, jeopardizes hygiene practices, and undermines our overall health and well-being. Moreover, it exacerbates existing inequalities within our community, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with health conditions.

Therefore, we, the concerned citizens of Sunninghill and more specifically Airdlin Road, demand that immediate action be taken to address this urgent matter, recognizing the violation of our human rights. We call upon the relevant authorities to undertake the following actions:

• Conduct a thorough investigation: Initiate an immediate and comprehensive investigation to identify the underlying causes of the waterpipe bursts, assessing the extent of the problem, and evaluating the impact on our community's human rights
• Replace the faulty waterpipe: Allocate resources and funding to replace the faulty waterpipe without delay, ensuring that a reliable and durable solution is implemented promptly to prevent future disruptions and safeguard our human rights to access clean water.
• Ensure spare parts availability: Implement a proactive approach to water infrastructure maintenance by stocking an adequate supply of necessary spare parts, ensuring prompt repairs and minimizing downtime that infringes upon our human rights.
• Emergency water supply provisions: Establish contingency plans to provide emergency water supplies to affected residents during repairs and pipe replacements, guaranteeing the fulfillment of our basic needs and upholding our human rights.
• Strengthen accountability and transparency: Establish mechanisms to enhance accountability and transparency within the water department, ensuring regular communication with the community, providing updates on progress, and seeking public input on decisions affecting our human rights.
