Petition to Remove Passing Zones & Reduce Speed Limit

The Issue

I'm rallying support for a petition to communicate to the Montana Department of Transportation that a change is necessary. The aim? To dial down the speed limit a bit and scrap the passing zones along a 3-mile segment of Highway 2, out west from Havre. Traveling west, the area starts at mile marker 379 near Tilleman's and ends at mile marker 376 just past the Big Sandy Creek bridge.  With numerous accidents occurring in this stretch, I'm worried there could be more. Let's join forces for the safety of our community! Your backing means the world.

Reasons:

Population Growth: Over the past several years, there has been a significant increase in population along this stretch of highway, resulting
in heightened traffic density.

Hazardous Conditions: This section of the highway features 27 approaches, a blind corner, three hills, and two narrow bridges. These elements significantly reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents. Commercial trucks with slower acceleration enter these access points, causing f aster-moving traffic to rapidly decelerate in order to avoid collisions.

School Bus Routes: School buses frequently travel this area, utilizing several approaches. The busses stop directly on the highway to
let children off in the passing zones.  The presence of passing zones poses a considerable safety risk to both students and drivers.

Accident Incidents: There have been numerous accidents recorded between mile markers 376 and 379, indicating a pressing need for improved safety measures.  High speeds have amplified the severity of accidents, resulting in the total destruction of numerous vehicles.

High Speeds: With a speed limit of 70 MPH during the day, drivers often exceed safe speeds, reaching in excess of 85 MPH while attempting to pass slower vehicles.

Resident Population: The population of residents utilizing these approaches exceeds 600, underscoring the importance of ensuring
their safety and well-being.

Narrow Bridges: Two narrow bridges, situated near mile markers 376 and 379 respectively, compound the already challenging driving conditions, particularly when coupled with adjacent hills.

Commercial Activity: Over six companies operate in this vicinity, employing over 60 individuals. Ensuring their safety on the road is paramount for both the employees and the companies they work for.

We believe that the removal of passing zones and reduction of speed limit on this section of US Highway 2 will significantly enhance road safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.
