Petition to Reinstate the Athletic PE Program at Thompson Middle School

Petition to Reinstate the Athletic PE Program at Thompson Middle School
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully request the reinstatement of the Athletic PE Program, including weight training and running, at Thompson Middle School. The recent removal of these essential programs threatens the physical health, mental well-being, and athletic development of our students.
Weightlifting and running are more than just physical activities—they are key building blocks in the healthy development of middle school students. These programs foster strong muscles and bones, reduce the risk of injury, and promote long-term physical fitness. Cardiovascular conditioning from running supports heart and lung health, while strength training enhances endurance, power, and injury prevention.
Beyond physical health, regular exercise has been proven to improve mental well-being. Activities like weightlifting and running help manage stress, anxiety, and depression by releasing natural endorphins. These exercises also build self-esteem and resilience—vital traits during the often challenging middle school years.
The elimination of the athletic PE program also jeopardizes student readiness for extracurricular and competitive sports. For many students, this program provides the only opportunity to receive structured conditioning that prepares them for high school athletics. Without it, our student-athletes are at a disadvantage, and their potential is being unnecessarily limited.
We urge the administration of Thompson Middle School and the Murrieta Valley Unified School District to restore weightlifting and running as core components of the PE curriculum. Doing so will reaffirm a commitment to the health, development, and future success of our youth.
Please sign this petition to support bringing back the athletic PE program and giving our students the tools they need to thrive.
