The Issue

At James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia, a significant change was decided on Friday, April 11, 2025. This change threatens to undermine the community’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As members of this vibrant community, we are deeply concerned about its consequences for our students, staff, and faculty.

The elimination of DEI initiatives directly impacts our beloved faculty and professors, who are losing their jobs as a result. Vital funding for student organizations that support minority communities is at risk of being cut, undermining their ability to operate effectively and advocate for those they serve. Furthermore, there's a real risk of alterations to program names that reflect and honor our diverse community, diluting the cultural significance of these spaces.

Without DEI, we lose more than programs and funding; we lose a significant part of our identity and the inclusive spirit that JMU is known for. We also lose the voices of minority students and faculty who have fought and continue to fight for equal opportunities and representation on campus.

We demand the reinstatement of the DEI division at JMU. To encourage transparent dialogue, we demand the organization of student town halls where minority voices can be heard and issues that affect our community can be addressed openly. We believe in accountability and ensuring everyone at JMU has their voices acknowledged and respected.

Upon his first say in office as the President of James Madison University, our demands for President James C. Schmidt are as follows:

Begin the formal process of reinstating the DEI offic at James Madison University, including reopening previously closed positions within the office, and maintaining the previously established role the office has played at JMU in good faith.

Formally sign the American Association of Colleges and Univerities statement: A Call for Constructive Engagement, publicly condemning the unprecedented government overreach and political interference currently endangering American higher education.

This petition is more than just a call to maintain programs; it's a plea to preserve the heart and soul of our university. We must act now to stop the rollback of DEI efforts and ensure that JMU remains a welcoming place for all, protecting our most vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Join us in this vital cause. By signing this petition, you're taking a stand for diversity, equity, and inclusion and supporting the continued growth and success of James Madison University. Please sign and share this petition to ensure every voice is heard and represented at JMU. Together, we can make a difference.
