This year at Michigan Technological University, a new Food Services Provider, under the name Chartwells, has implemented a terrible new program throughout the dining halls on campus. In the few weeks that students have been on campus, they have undergone countless issues with the new Dining Services, and there seems to be no hope in sight. Students are paying thousands of dollars for their meal plans, only to be met with subpar food that is unpalatable and often times raw or severely undercooked, long lines due to the extreme lack of readily prepared food, and frequent failure to acquire a substantial meal due to the food running out quickly. Furthermore, the times where the dining hall actually provides hot meals (not the deli/salad station that is always available [if they did not run out of stuff]) does not align with the schedules of most of the students. Students who have classes from 9am-11am are unable to get breakfast after class because the dining hall stops making it around 10:30am (if they food they have prepared even lasts that long) and the same goes for students who have classes from 12pm-2pm or 5pm-7pm being unable to acquire lunch or dinner after class. There is always the deli, salad, and waffle stations, but they also frequently run out of popular items and do not provide enough substantial nutrition for students to survive off of every day. Beyond what I have mentioned here, there have also been numerous other issues, including international students not getting paid for their work, which is completely unacceptable and inhumane. In the first few weeks some of these issues may have been expected, but it is getting to the point now that it is affecting the lives and well-being of the students at Michigan Tech. If an individual is expected to pay thousands of dollars for a meal plan, then it is their right to be given food options that amount to this investment. By signing this petition, you are demanding that MTU refund students for their meal plans as a result of these issues and their inability to resolve them in a timely manner. College is difficult enough for students as it is, and being able to eat a proper meal should not be yet another problem to add to their plate.
