Petition to Reduce the Unfair Tax Burden on Single-Earning Families

Petition to Reduce the Unfair Tax Burden on Single-Earning Families
The Issue
We, the undersigned citizens of India, urge the government to address the unfair tax burden on single-earning families. The current tax structure disproportionately penalizes households where only one member earns, while dual-income families enjoy significant tax benefits despite having the same total income.
Issue at Hand:
Currently, a family with a total income of ₹25 lakhs, where both husband and wife earn ₹12.5 lakhs each, effectively pays little to no income tax due to the benefit of individual tax slabs, deductions, and exemptions. However, a single-earner family with the same income is taxed at the highest slab, often paying around 30% in taxes. This is unfair and discriminatory against single-earner families who bear the same expenses but face a much higher tax liability.
Why This Needs to Change:
1. Unfair Tax Disparity – Two families with the same total income should not be taxed so differently based on the number of earners.
2. Encouraging Family Well-Being – Many families have only one earning member due to childcare, elder care, or other responsibilities. The current tax system discourages such choices.
3. Economic Justice – Single-income families have the same financial needs as dual-income ones, including household expenses, children’s education, and healthcare. They should not be unfairly penalized.
4. Supporting Traditional Family Structures – Many households rely on a single income due to personal or cultural reasons, and they deserve equal tax treatment.
Our Demand:
We request the government to introduce “Household Income Taxation” or provide relief measures such as:
• Income Splitting: Allow a single-earning spouse to split taxable income between both partners for fairer tax treatment.
• Higher Tax Rebates: Provide higher standard deductions or rebates for single-income families.
• Revised Tax Slabs: Adjust slabs to reduce the burden on families with only one earning member.
• Additional Deductions: Increase Section 80C and 80D limits for single-income households.
We believe that a fair tax system should not penalize families based on the number of earners but should instead ensure equality and economic justice. We urge the government to take immediate action in the upcoming budget to rectify this disparity.
