The Issue

The Winnie L. Hooper Community Center is not just a building — it is the heartbeat of our community.

For generations, this center has served as a safe, accessible space for children, families, and residents in Mooresville. It has provided vital programming, stability, and opportunity, particularly for youth who rely on nearby, community-based resources.

We are deeply concerned about the impact of the closure or transfer of the Winnie L. Hooper Community Center, including:

• The loss of accessible programming for children in the surrounding community

• The displacement of youth to facilities farther away from their own neighborhood

• The lack of transparency surrounding the decision-making process

• The long-term harm to community trust and neighborhood well-being

Public community centers should remain dedicated to serving the residents they were built to support. Decisions affecting these spaces must prioritize community needs, fairness, accountability, and transparency.

We respectfully call on the Town of Mooresville to:

• Reopen the Winnie L. Hooper Community Center for public community use

• Provide a clear and public explanation regarding the decision to transfer, repurpose, or close the facility

• Hold a public community meeting so residents can ask questions and voice concerns

• Ensure all future decisions involving public facilities include meaningful community input

This petition represents our collective voice and our shared commitment to protecting public resources that strengthen our neighborhood, support our children, and safeguard our community’s future.
