🌌 Petition to Protect Liberty Hill’s Dark Sky Designation
The Issue
Liberty Hill earned something rare: a Dark Sky designation. But right now, it's at risk because lighting standards aren't being enforced. Light spilling into homes, glare hits you in the eyes while driving, skyglow is getting brighter, wildlife disappearing, and we're watching what makes this community special slip away.
Liberty Hill’s Dark Sky designation isn’t just a title, it’s something that directly impacts your quality of life, property value, and our local economy. Right now, that’s at risk. When lighting standards aren’t enforced: • Light trespasses into your home • Glare makes roads less safe • Wildlife disappears • And we begin to lose the stars that make Liberty Hill special.
At the same time, we risk losing something rare:
✨ A multi billion dollar growing tourism economy that brings visitors, supports local businesses, and puts Liberty Hill on the map (Astro tourism & Astrophotography)
✨ A rare community identity centered around our beautiful night skies
✨ A designation that we worked on for over two years.
This isn't about adding new rules, it's about actually following the ones on the books - not weakening those standards. What's at stake? Our night skies, sure. But also our own personal health, the health of our ecosystem, and the astro-tourism economy that's bringing real money to local businesses, the community identity we built around those stars, and the investment we made to earn this designation in the first place.
Now it’s time to protect that investment. By signing, you are supporting:
✔ Consistent enforcement of existing lighting standards
✔ Protection of your home, neighborhood, and night skies
✔ A safer, healthier environment for people and wildlife
✔ Long-term economic growth through astro-tourism. If we don’t act, we risk losing all of it.
This is our sky.
Our community.
Our responsibility.
