The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Framingham, write to express our strong opposition to the proposed elimination of the Chinese language program at Framingham High School. As members of a community that has long prided itself on diversity and inclusion, we believe this decision would be detrimental to our students, our community, and the values that define Framingham.
Chinese is Not Just Another Language—It is a Global Necessity
Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over one billion people worldwide and is essential for economic, diplomatic, and cultural engagement in the 21st century. Eliminating this program sends a troubling message that Framingham does not value preparing our students for a globalized world or respect one of the world's most important languages and cultures.
This Decision Harms Our Students and Community
The removal of the Chinese language program will have far-reaching negative consequences:
1. Impact on Student Identity and Belonging: For Chinese-American students, this program provides a vital connection to their heritage and cultural identity. Eliminating it tells these students that their language and culture are expendable, undermining their sense of belonging in our schools.
2. Exclusion of the Chinese Community: This decision signals to Chinese families that they are not valued members of our community. At a time when we should be strengthening bonds across all cultures, this move creates division and sends a message of exclusion.
3. Deterrent to Diverse Families: Framingham has been an attractive destination for Asian-American families precisely because of our commitment to multicultural education. Cutting the Chinese program will discourage Chinese and other Asian families from choosing Framingham as their home, ultimately reducing the diversity that strengthens our community.
4. Decrease in Overall Community Diversity: Diversity enriches learning for all students, not just those from Chinese backgrounds. The Chinese language program creates opportunities for cross-cultural understanding, fosters global awareness, and exposes students to different ways of thinking. Cutting this program reduces these vital opportunities and diminishes the cultural richness that makes Framingham High School a dynamic learning environment. When we eliminate programs that celebrate and teach diverse cultures, we deprive every student—regardless of their background—of the chance to become more culturally competent, empathetic, and globally minded citizens.
5. Contradiction to Framingham's Values: Framingham has consistently promoted itself as a diverse, inclusive community. Eliminating a major world language program directly contradicts these values and damages our reputation as a forward-thinking, globally-minded city.
Our Children Deserve Better
In an increasingly interconnected world, our students need exposure to diverse languages and cultures more than ever. Language education fosters empathy, cultural understanding, and global citizenship—skills essential for the next generation. Cutting the Chinese program deprives all our students of these opportunities and sends a harmful message about which cultures we value.
We Urge You to Reconsider
We call on the Framingham School Committee and school administration to reverse this decision and maintain the Chinese language program. Our community's strength lies in its diversity, and our schools must reflect and celebrate that diversity—not diminish it.
We stand ready to work with you to find solutions that preserve this vital program while addressing any budgetary concerns.
