Petition to Pause the Permanent Closure of Hastings Creek Trail

Petition to Pause the Permanent Closure of Hastings Creek Trail
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and users of Hastings Creek Trail, respectfully request that the District of North Vancouver pause the proposed permanent closure of the central section of the Hastings Creek Trail and undertake meaningful community consultation before any final decision is made.
Hastings Creek Trail is a heavily used neighbourhood trail that provides essential access to nature, supports mental and physical well-being, and connects residents to the wider Lynn Valley trail network. Despite its extended “temporary closure,” the trail continues to be used daily by local residents, indicating its ongoing importance and the lack of comparable nearby alternatives.
We recognize that the District must consider public safety, environmental protection, and long-term maintenance challenges. However, decisions that permanently alter access to valued public spaces should be informed by the experience of the community members who use them most. Many residents remain concerned that consultation to date has been limited and that broader community perspectives have not been adequately considered.
As Lynn Valley continues to grow and densify, access to local green space is increasingly important. Closing established neighbourhood trails without meaningful public engagement risks undermining community well-being, increasing reliance on vehicles to reach recreation, and creating unintended safety issues through informal trail and creek crossings.
We are not asking that safety concerns be ignored. We are asking for a pause, transparency, and genuine dialogue. We respectfully request that the District engage the community through public meetings, surveys, or other inclusive consultation methods to explore options that balance safety, environmental stewardship, and continued community access.
Requested Action:
Pause the permanent closure of the Hastings Creek Trail and conduct meaningful community consultation before any final decision is made.
