The Issue

Petition to Oppose Unwarranted Restrictions by City Council

We respectfully oppose the proposed expansion of city-imposed restrictions that would broadly limit lawful public activities without clear, evidence-based justification.

What began as a narrowly defined concern has evolved into a sweeping policy that impacts a wide range of residents and visitors. Such regulatory overreach raises serious concerns about proportionality, necessity, and consistency with established rights.  In Florida, the right to fish is constitutionally protected and reflects a long-standing cultural, economic, and recreational tradition. While reasonable regulation is appropriate, any restriction must be narrowly tailored, supported by credible data, and aligned with state law. Broad prohibitions that lack clear evidence of effectiveness risk undermining both public trust and lawful use of shared resources.

We urge the City Council to:

-Reconsider any blanket restrictions that are not supported by clear and compelling evidence
-Engage stakeholders in a transparent, inclusive process
-Prioritize targeted, enforceable solutions over broad prohibitions--
-Ensure all policies remain consistent with state law and constitutional protections
-Public policy should be driven by data, fairness, and respect for individual rights—not by isolated incidents or speculative concerns.

We respectfully request that the City Council halt this proposal and pursue a more balanced, evidence-based approach.
