PETITION TO OPPOSE THE CLOSURE OF THE GREATER GREENVILLE SANITATION DISTRICT

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Greater Greenville, South Carolina, strongly oppose the

proposed legislation that seeks to dissolve or restrict the operations of the Greater Greenville

Sanitation District (GGSD). These bills (H.4002 and H.4003), if passed, would have severe

consequences for our community, including potential service disruptions, increased costs, and the

loss of a reliable and essential public service.

The GGSD has long provided efficient, affordable, and dependable waste management services

to our community. Its dissolution or restriction would force residents to rely on private waste

pickup services, which could lead to higher costs, inconsistent service quality, and a lack of

accountability. Additionally, the proposed changes would disrupt the current system, creating

unnecessary confusion and hardship for families and businesses alike.

We are deeply concerned about the motivations behind these bills and the potential conflicts of

interest they may represent. The GGSD operates in the best interest of the community, and its

removal would disproportionately benefit private companies at the expense of residents.

Furthermore, the proposed shift to flat fees instead of property tax collection could place an

unfair financial burden on low-income households and fixed-income seniors.

We urge our elected officials to consider the following:

1. Preserve the GGSD: Maintain the current system, with meaningful and subtle changes

that would prove to be effective, affordable, and community-focused.

2. Protect Residents: Avoid measures that would increase costs, reduce service quality, or

create unnecessary disruptions for families and businesses.

3. Ensure Transparency: Investigate the motivations behind these bills and ensure that any

proposed changes prioritize the well-being of the community over private interests.

By signing this petition, we stand together in opposition to the proposed legislation and call on

our lawmakers to protect the Greater Greenville Sanitation District and the vital services it

provides to our community.
