Petition to Oppose AI Data Center Development in Windsor and Weld County
Petition to Oppose AI Data Center Development in Windsor and Weld County
The Issue
To: Weld County Board of Commissioners & Planning Commission
We, the undersigned residents of Windsor, Weld County, and surrounding communities, formally oppose the placement and development of AI data centers within our community.
⚠️ Why This Matters
At first glance, projects like this are framed as progress—economic development, modernization, and growth.
- But decisions like this don’t just affect today.
- They shape what our community becomes 10, 20, even 30 years from now.
🚨 Key Concerns
Water Resources Are Already Under Strain
AI data centers require extremely high water usage for cooling.
Northern Colorado is already facing pressure from drought, population growth, and limited shared water systems.
Committing large-scale water use to a single industrial facility risks long-term strain on Windsor and Weld County.
24/7 Noise Will Impact Residents
Data centers operate continuously and generate constant low-frequency noise.
In other communities, residents report a persistent hum that affects:
- Sleep
- Property values
- Overall quality of life
- This is not temporary—it’s permanent once built.
Infrastructure Is Not Prepared for This Scale
These facilities require massive electricity and utility capacity—often comparable to a small town.
Weld County is already managing rapid growth challenges:
- Traffic and road planning
- Utility coordination
- Infrastructure consistency
Approving a project of this magnitude without resolving existing issues creates long-term risk and cost.
Economic Benefits Are Often Overstated
While promoted as economic drivers:
- Data centers create very few permanent jobs
- Many roles require specialized skills not sourced locally
- Tax incentives can reduce actual financial benefit
In many cases, communities carry more long-term cost than return.
Land-Use Conflicts Are Irreversible
Data centers are not typical industrial projects.
They introduce:
- Continuous operations
- Heavy infrastructure demands
- Noise and environmental impacts
Placing them near residential areas creates conflicts that cannot be undone.
Protections and Transparency Are Not Yet in Place
Before any approval, residents deserve:
- Full environmental impact assessments
- Clear limits on water use and noise
- Transparency from developers
- Guarantees that long-term costs won’t fall on the community
Moving forward without these safeguards is premature.
This Does Not Align With Community Character
Windsor and Weld County are defined by:
- Family-oriented neighborhoods
- Open space and agriculture
- Quality of life
A large-scale AI data center introduces industrial impacts that do not align with these priorities.
✔️ Our Position
We are not opposed to growth or innovation.
We support development that is responsible, sustainable, and aligned with the community’s long-term interests.
However, this project does not meet the standard of sustainable, community-aligned development and should not move forward.
📢 Our Request
We respectfully urge officials to:
- Reject or delay approval of AI data center development
- Require full environmental and infrastructure review
- Ensure meaningful public input before any final decision
