Petition to MTCBC Planning Department: WE support Rhydycar West
The Issue
Say YES to Rhydycar West
We, the undersigned, call on Merthyr Tydfil Council’s Planning Department to approve the Rhydycar West development. Despite overwhelming public support and the significant economic benefits it would bring, the council planners have recommended refusal, citing ecological and landscape concerns, even though Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has raised no objections.
Key reasons to support the development:
- 1,500 jobs during construction, with 1,200 of those expected to come from the local area.
- 842 jobs during operation, with 663 projected to be filled by the local workforce.
- A £317.6 million GVA generated during construction, with an additional £38.1 million GVA annually.
- £300 million in investment into the local area, significantly boosting our economy.
Despite these clear benefits, Judith Jones and Merthyr Tydfil’s Planning Department have failed to fully recognise the economic case for the development and have recommended refusal. Councillors will meet next Wednesday to review the report and make their final decision.
With 94.5% of residents in favour and strong backing from local businesses and organisations, we believe the social and economic advantages far outweigh any ecological concerns, which have already been addressed through a comprehensive mitigation plan agreed with NRW.
We urge the Merthyr Tydfil Council Planning Committee to approve this vital project for the future of our town.
Please show your support by signing this petition before March 12th, when the final decision will be made.
