Solid Mechanics - Make 50% Coursework and 50% Exam Weighting

The Issue

We, the undersigned students of the Solid Mechanics, hereby express our collective concern and request for a more balanced grading structure in module. We believe that a 50% coursework and 50% in-person exam split is the most equitable and effective way to assess our understanding and performance. Below are our reasons for this request:

1.     Balanced Assessment for Comprehensive Learning: A balanced grading structure ensures that our understanding of the subject is evaluated comprehensively.  A coursework assessment provides opportunities for continuous learning and feedback, which enhances our overall grasp of the material.

2.     Reduction of Exam-Induced Stress: An 80% weight on a single in-person exam can lead to excessive stress and anxiety among students. A 50% coursework and 50% exam split would alleviate this pressure and promote a healthier learning environment.

3.     Accommodating Different Learning Styles: Every student learns differently. Some of us may excel through consistent coursework, while others may thrive in exam settings. A balanced approach acknowledges and accommodates diverse learning styles and abilities.

4.     Ensuring Fair Evaluation: A more balanced grading structure helps ensure fair evaluation. Students who may face unexpected challenges during the exam, such as illness or personal issues, will have a better chance to demonstrate their knowledge through coursework.

5.     Skill Diversity: Mechanics is a multidisciplinary subject that requires theoretical knowledge and practical application. A 50% coursework weight acknowledges and values both aspects of learning.

6.     Real-World Preparation: The balanced approach better prepares us for real-world applications, where knowledge retention and the ability to apply concepts in practical scenarios are equally important.

We kindly request that our voices be heard, and our preferences be considered in maintaining the current assessment weighting. We believe this will contribute to a more equitable and effective learning environment for all students.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the administration and faculty to modify the grading structure for our solid mechanics course to be 50% coursework and 50% in-person exams, starting from the current semester.
