Legalize Cannabis in India:

End the Stigma, Boost the Economy, and Promote Health

We, the undersigned, call on the Government of India to legalize cannabis and end the unjust criminalization that has plagued our society under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Legalizing cannabis will not only alleviate unnecessary stigma and harassment but also create a regulated market that benefits public health and the economy.

The Problem:

Cannabis has been wrongly criminalized in India, leading to widespread harassment and the growth of a dangerous black market. The NDPS Act of 1985, which criminalizes cannabis, was influenced by international pressure and lacks a scientific basis. This outdated law continues to harm countless individuals, particularly those who use cannabis for medicinal purposes.

The Solution:

End the Stigma: Legalizing cannabis will help remove the social stigma associated with its use. People should not be harassed or criminalized for using a plant with well-documented benefits.
Boost the Economy: By creating a regulated cannabis market, India can generate significant revenue through taxation. States like Colorado in the USA have shown that legalized cannabis can create jobs, stimulate local economies, and provide substantial tax revenues that can be used for public services.

Promote Health:

Cannabis has numerous medicinal benefits. It is used to treat chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and various mental health conditions. Legalization will ensure that patients have safe and regulated access to cannabis for their health needs.
Reduce the Black Market: Legalization will help dismantle the illegal cannabis trade, reducing crime and making cannabis safer for consumers through regulation and quality control.

We urge the Government of India to:
