Petition to Keep the Philly Book Bank at MLK High School

We, the undersigned, earnestly appeal to the School District of Philadelphia and all relevant stakeholders to champion and ensure the continued presence of the Philly Book Bank at Martin Luther King High School in Philadelphia.

The Philly Book Bank is an indispensable resource for educators, students, and families throughout our city. Providing free books and educational materials plays a crucial role in addressing literacy inequities and bolstering classroom learning, particularly in underfunded and underserved communities.

With a limited number of school libraries in the district and public libraries operating on restricted hours, students face a significant challenge in accessing books. In light of these limitations, it is crucial that we maintain resources like the Philly Book Bank. The question we must ask is, is it really the right time to eliminate such a critical asset?

While we have proactively addressed various code violations, the ever-changing standards have made achieving compliance increasingly difficult. It is vital to emphasize that we have not been included in continuing discussions concerning these regulations.

**Why the Philly Book Bank is Essential:**

- It delivers tens of thousands of free books each year to teachers and childcare providers committed to nurturing the minds of Philadelphia's youth.

- It sparks a passion for reading, supports literacy development, and contributes to the academic success of our children.

- It maximizes the impact of donated materials and community support, operating with remarkable efficiency and minimal cost.

- Its current location at MLK High School ensures accessibility, visibility, and strong connections within the community.

- Moving or eliminating the Book Bank from MLK High School would create significant barriers for countless educators and students who depend on its invaluable services.

- It offers job training to students in the special education department.

- It runs a literacy-based program strictly for pregnant and parenting School District of Philadelphia students.

We, the undersigned, urge the School District and all decision-makers to:

1. Allow the Philly Book Bank to remain at MLK High School.

2. Acknowledge its vital contribution to literacy and education in Philadelphia.

3. Ensure that there is enough space to maintain its effectiveness.

4. Collaborate with us to ensure its ongoing safe operation and accessibility for those most need it.

The Philly Book Bank transcends its function as a mere storage space; it is a lighthouse of hope, equity, and empowerment for the children of Philadelphia. Let's ensure it continues to shine brightly where it belongs.

Join us in signing this petition to demonstrate your support and help safeguard this essential resource for our community. Your signature matters.
