Petition to Implement a Grade Curve for Nursing 122 Students
Petition to Implement a Grade Curve for Nursing 122 Students
The Issue
We, the students of Nursing 122 are writing this to express our concerns regarding the challenges we have encountered during the Spring 2024 semester.
This semester started with many uncertainties. We all signed up for our preferred clinical days during the Fall 2023 semester. Students chose their clinical day based on work schedules and availability. We asked multiple times for our clinical schedule but were told that it was not finished. Ultimately the clinical rotation schedule was posted on 1/24. The first clinical day was 1/27. Only three days notice that our preferred clinical days were not being honored and we were required to rotate between Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. Many students received backlash from their employers and lost wages due to this change. In addition, there were 6 revisions done on the clinical rotation schedule. There was no communication of the revisions made on the clinical schedule.
There were many lectures that were read straight from the PowerPoint, which consisted of text that was copied and pasted from the textbook. The lectures did not provide an opportunity to increase our critical thinking skills. When students asked clarifying questions during lectures, they often were answered with a rhetorical question or met with an answer that did not clarify the information being asked.
Pediatric PowerPoints were often not posted until the day prior to class. In Nursing 1, we were taught that coming to class prepared is essential to being successful. We were not granted that opportunity as the content being taught to us was not posted in time. Again, the slides contained copy and paste text from the textbook. Multiple modalities of learning were not included in lectures. Effective teaching involves more than just relaying information from books.
Cohort A and Cohort B had two different experiences in the pediatric lecture content. We believe this inequality shows in our exam grades.
The unique circumstances that occurred semester caused a great amount of emotional distress for the students. High levels of stress can negatively affect cognitive functions such as memory and concentration. As a result, we believe this has impacted our academic performance and overall learning experience
We request an implementation of a grade curve, or points added to our final grade. We ask that you consider our request with compassion and empathy, and in turn demonstrate the school's commitment to providing a quality educational experience.
