Dear Commissioner Higgins,  

 

We write to you as a collective of deeply invested residents, parents, caregivers, and community members who love where we live, and want to see it grow with intention.   Brickell is thriving. Young families are choosing to raise their children here, not just work here. But despite the population boom, there remains no public indoor space for children within walking distance of Brickell, Brickell Key, or Key Biscayne. Not one.   

 

The sheer number of schools and childcare centers in the area is a clear indicator of just how many families are raising young children here. Brickell and its immediate surroundings are already home to Southside Preparatory Academy, Mater Brickell Academy Middle and High Schools, Key Point Academy Brickell, DelCampo International School, The Gordon School, and WorldEd International School. The area also includes multiple preschools and daycares, such as Brickell Heights Preschool, Brumer Preschool of the Arts – Brickell Jewish Montessori, Champs Brickell, Aguamarina Preschools, Brickell International Academy, and Kids Learning Adventure. And even with this infrastructure in place, many of these schools are beginning to overflow. The demand is outpacing the resources. Families need more.   We are thrilled to see that the County Commission has already begun exploring this need, and we are especially grateful for your leadership in supporting families in this community. Your continued investment in Brickell’s children makes us proud of the leaders we voted for, and gives us confidence in the direction we’re headed together.  

 

A public library here would be transformative. It would:  

• Provide access to books, early literacy programs, STEM workshops, and crafts  

• Create a safe, air-conditioned indoor space where children can learn, play, and gather without risk of overheating   

• Serve as a hub for family programming and inclusive community connection

 • Offer free and welcoming options for those who don’t drive or can’t afford private spaces  

• Reduce safety risks that exist in parks and hold outdoor classes (where families have requested increased police presence)  

It would also support local businesses. A neighborhood library draws families throughout the day, increasing foot traffic to nearby cafés, shops, and restaurants. Parents stopping by for storytime are more likely to grab coffee, lunch, or run errands nearby, boosting the local economy while building community.  

 

It is not lost on us that many families cannot afford memberships to places like the Frost Museum or other private venues. Even when they can, the hours are limited and often inaccessible. It's not sustainable, and it leaves many behind. Not all families have the privilege of cars, nannies, or flexible schedules.   

 

We believe that a library in Brickell is no longer a “nice-to-have”, it is essential for the health and development of our children and the strength of our community.  

 

Research continues to show the lifelong benefits of access to early learning environments like libraries. They support school readiness, reduce social isolation for caregivers, and create positive childhood experiences that shape who our kids become.  

 

We see your commitment, and we deeply appreciate it. Leadership that prioritizes children and families, especially in a district growing as rapidly as ours, not only strengthens our neighborhoods, but reinforces our trust in those who serve them. This kind of investment lays the groundwork for lasting community support, and we’re genuinely excited about what it can mean for the future of Brickell. We’re ready to help make it happen and hope you’ll continue to champion this vision by creating safe, inclusive spaces where our children can learn, grow, and thrive together.  

 

We also want to emphasize that this effort is backed by a strong and growing coalition of Brickell residents. These are not just concerned individuals, they are deeply engaged residents, professionals, and advocates who are organizing around a shared commitment to public access, education, and vibrant community resources. We’d welcome the opportunity to connect and explore how we can contribute to or amplify Commissioner Higgins’ work on this front. Brickell Kids and Community   -------------------- Estimada Comisionada Higgins,   Le escribimos como un colectivo de padres, cuidadores y miembros de la comunidad profundamente comprometidos, que amamos el lugar donde vivimos y queremos verlo crecer con intención.   Brickell está prosperando. Las familias jóvenes están eligiendo criar a sus hijos aquí, no solo trabajar aquí. Pero a pesar del auge poblacional, no existe ningún espacio público techado para niños al que se pueda llegar caminando desde Brickell, Brickell Key o Key Biscayne. Ni uno solo.   No hay una biblioteca de barrio. No hay un espacio comunitario gratuito para clases, horas de cuentos, manualidades o programas de alfabetización temprana.   La gran cantidad de escuelas y centros de cuidado infantil en la zona es un claro indicador de cuántas familias están criando niños pequeños aquí. Brickell y sus alrededores inmediatos ya albergan a Southside Preparatory Academy, Mater Brickell Academy Middle and High Schools, Key Point Academy Brickell, DelCampo International School, The Gordon School y WorldEd International School. Su continuo compromiso con los niños de Brickell nos enorgullece como votantes y nos da confianza en la dirección que estamos tomando juntos.   Una biblioteca pública aquí sería transformadora. Proporcionaría:   • Acceso a libros, programas de alfabetización temprana, talleres de STEM y manualidades 
• Un espacio techado con aire acondicionado donde los niños puedan aprender, jugar y reunirse sin riesgo de sobrecalentamiento 
• Un centro para programas familiares y conexión comunitaria inclusiva 
• Opciones gratuitas y acogedoras para quienes no manejan o no pueden pagar espacios privados   • Una reducción en los riesgos de seguridad existentes en parques y clases al aire libre (donde las familias ya han solicitado una mayor presencia policial)   También beneficiaría a los negocios locales. Una biblioteca de barrio atrae a las familias durante todo el día, aumentando el flujo de personas hacia cafés, tiendas y restaurantes cercanos. Los padres que asisten a la hora de cuentos tienen más probabilidades de tomar un café, almorzar o hacer diligencias cerca, impulsando la economía local mientras fortalecen la comunidad.   No se nos escapa que muchas familias no pueden pagar membresías en lugares como el Frost Museum u otros espacios privados. Incluso cuando pueden, los horarios son limitados y con frecuencia inaccesibles. No es sostenible, y deja atrás a muchos. No todas las familias tienen el privilegio de contar con autos, niñeras o horarios flexibles.   Creemos que una biblioteca en Brickell ya no es un “lujo” o un “bonito complemento”; es esencial para la salud y el desarrollo de nuestros niños y la fortaleza de nuestra comunidad.   La investigación sigue demostrando los beneficios a largo plazo del acceso a entornos de aprendizaje temprano como las bibliotecas.
