The Issue

To: Local Officials, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Relevant Authorities

We, the undersigned residents of Anderson, Indiana, and concerned citizens, are petitioning for immediate and sustained action regarding the hazardous Superfund site located at the intersection of Broadway Street and Grand Avenue (46016). This site, which has been designated as a National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund site, contains dangerous levels of contamination, posing severe risks to our health, environment, and the future of our community.

Key Concerns:

Health and Environmental Risks: The site is known to contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in finished water and vinyl chloride in raw water, both of which are hazardous to human health and the environment. Exposure to these substances can cause serious health issues, including cancer, respiratory problems, and neurological damage.
Lack of Progress: The last update from the EPA on this site was in 2018, and despite being eligible for federal funding under the Superfund law, no significant progress has been made in the cleanup process. This is unacceptable, and it is putting the health and safety of our community at risk.
Urgent Need for Local Action: While federal funds are available to address this issue, we need the local government to take a more proactive role in pushing for immediate action and ensuring that the site is prioritized for cleanup. Local leadership must demand that the EPA and other authorities take the necessary steps to clean up this hazardous site without further delay.
Our Demands:

Immediate Action: We demand that our local officials, including the mayor, city council members, and state representatives, work with the EPA to accelerate the cleanup of this site.
Transparency and Community Involvement: We request that the community be actively involved in the decision-making process, with opportunities for public input on cleanup plans, regular updates from local authorities, and engagement in community advisory groups.
Federal Funding: We call for the use of available federal funding to expedite the remediation of this site and restore the safety of our environment.
By signing this petition, we are standing together to protect our community, demand timely cleanup of this site, and hold our local officials accountable for the health and safety of Anderson residents.

Thank you for your support. Together, we can make a difference!
