Petition to Connetquot High School: Address Islamophobic Misinformation in the Classroom

The Issue

Ensure Accurate Representation of Islam in School Curriculum

We, the undersigned, express deep concern over a recent assignment given to the 9th-grade Global Honors History class that contained Islamophobic misinformation, misrepresenting Islam by falsely claiming that the hijab is oppressive and that Sharia law is a danger to society. Such statements are not only factually incorrect but also harmful, as they perpetuate dangerous stereotypes, foster Islamophobia, and create a hostile learning environment for Muslim students.

With over 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, spread across 57 diverse countries, Islam is practiced in a vast array of cultural and national contexts. The material presented to students fails to reflect this diversity and instead reinforces outdated, biased, and often incorrect narratives. Education should be based on facts, not stereotypes, and should aim to foster understanding, respect, and critical thinking rather than perpetuate misconceptions.

Schools should be a place where students learn accurate history and develop an understanding of diverse cultures and religions based on facts, not bias. The dissemination of misinformation about Islam contradicts the principles of education, inclusivity, and respect that schools are meant to uphold. This incident underscores the urgent need for culturally competent curricula and proper training for educators to prevent the spread of prejudice in the classroom.

We, therefore, call on Connetquot High School and the Connetquot Central School District to take the following actions:

  1. Issue a Public Acknowledgment and Apology – Recognize the harm caused by this assignment and publicly affirm the district’s commitment to inclusivity and accurate representation of all religions.

  2. Conduct a Review of Curriculum Materials – Ensure that teaching materials related to world religions are fact-checked and free from bias, particularly those concerning Islam and other marginalized communities.

  3. Implement Sensitivity Training for Educators – Provide mandatory professional development for teachers and staff to promote cultural competency and prevent discriminatory teaching practices.

  4. Engage with the Muslim Community and Experts – Collaborate with Muslim organizations, scholars, and local community members to provide accurate resources and guidance on teaching about Islam.

  5. Establish Clear Reporting Mechanisms for Bias – Create accessible ways for students and parents to report instances of bias or misinformation in the curriculum without fear of retaliation.

We urge Connetquot High School and the Connetquot Central School District to take these necessary steps to ensure a safe, inclusive, and fact-based learning environment for all students. Education should challenge prejudice, not reinforce it.
