Petition to Combat Marriage Fraud and Protect Canadian Immigration Integrity
Petition to Combat Marriage Fraud and Protect Canadian Immigration Integrity
The Issue
Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
Marriage fraud for the sole purpose of immigration, often referred to as "marriages of convenience," undermines the integrity of Canada’s immigration system and exploits the good faith of Canadian citizens and permanent residents;
Canadian sponsors face significant financial, emotional, and legal hardships when foreign nationals use marriage to secure Permanent Resident (PR) status and subsequently abandon the relationship shortly after arrival; and
Current legal frameworks do not sufficiently deter this predatory behavior, leaving victims with limited recourse under immigration and family law.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to:
Amend immigration laws to automatically revoke the Permanent Resident status of foreign nationals found to have entered into a marriage of convenience or fraudulent relationship;
Implement stricter penalties, including mandatory deportation and criminal prosecution for individuals who perpetrate immigration-related marriage fraud; and
Review and amend family law provisions to protect Canadian sponsors from financial exploitation, ensuring that fraudulent spouses cannot benefit from spousal support or division of assets resulting from a bad-faith marriage.
