We, the undersigned, respectfully call on New York City lawmakers to introduce and pass legislation that bans the use of fossil fuel–powered generators on ice cream trucks.

While these trucks bring joy and nostalgia to our neighborhoods, their continued reliance on gas or diesel generators comes at a serious cost. These generators often run for hours at a time, emitting harmful pollutants right where children and families gather—at playgrounds, schoolyards, parks, and residential streets.

The noise, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions generated by these vehicles contribute to climate change, threaten public health (especially in children with asthma), and diminish the quality of life in our communities.

We urge the City Council to:

Ban the use of fossil fuel–powered generators on all mobile food vendors, starting with ice cream trucks.
Require a transition to electric, battery-powered, or solar-powered systems within a reasonable timeline.
Provide incentives or subsidies to help small business owners make the switch affordably.

New York City has already led the way on climate and environmental action. Let’s continue that leadership by modernizing how food trucks operate—making our city cleaner, quieter, and healthier for everyone.
