Petition to Approve Mental Health days for K–12 students in Georgia
The Issue
My daughter, like many children, faces an emotional burden that is often overlooked by the educational system. She suddenly lost her father in December 2024 and had been healing from the absence of her stepfather, who played a pivotal role in her life for seven years. Since her father passed away, she frequently encounters days where grief overwhelms her, especially during emotional triggers like Father's Day, father-daughter events, and when hearing stories from her classmates about their fathers. The emotional and mental health needs of children grappling with such losses are deeply underestimated but are genuine and pressing concerns.
Some U.S. states provide mental health days for students in K-12. Such as: Illinois (5 days), California, Oregon (up to 5 days over 3 months), Maine, Virginia, Connecticut, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Kentucky. The State of Georgia currently does not have a policy that allows for mental health days for students in K-12 schools. Recognizing mental health days as an excused absence can serve as an essential tool to help students cope with emotional and mental health challenges. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year. Schools can play a vital role in supporting the emotional well-being of their students by permitting these days and acknowledging mental health as an integral part of overall health.
Mental health days would provide students with the opportunity to learn coping mechanisms, seek therapy, and ensure they are mentally fit to attend school regularly. It is crucial to equip our children with the resources and time they need to heal and manage their mental health effectively, thus fostering a more compassionate and understanding school environment.
By approving mental health days, the Georgia State Board of Education can set a precedent and contribute actively to the betterment of student mental health. This policy change would acknowledge the importance of mental health, reduce stigma, and bolster student performance and happiness. Imagine the difference it could make to thousands of children, just like my daughter, who are in need of a day of emotional respite to reset and heal.
I urge the Georgia State Board of Education to consider the approval of mental health days for K-12 students. Sign this petition to support a change that could positively impact the lives of numerous children across Georgia. Your signature can help us give children the emotional support and recognition they truly deserve.
Thank you so much for reading our story and we look forward to your support.
