Petition to Amend the U.S. Constitution Via Convention

Petition to Amend the U.S. Constitution Via Convention

The Issue

Petition your state legislature to pass a resolution asking Congress for a national convention. The national convention method is a legitimate but unused pathway for amending the Constitution.

This petition calls for a constitutional amendment to bar convicted felons from holding federal office, protecting public trust and preventing potential conflicts of interest.

  • Problem: The ambiguity surrounding the eligibility of convicted felons for federal office.
  •  Proposed Solution:  We, the undersigned, petition Congress to initiate the process of amending the U.S. Constitution to explicitly bar individuals with felony convictions from holding any federal office, whether elected or appointed, including positions within federal agencies and departments.
  • Justification:
       * Public Trust:  This amendment strengthens public confidence in the integrity of government.
       * Conflicts of Interest:  The potential for conflicts of interest when individuals with felony convictions hold positions of power.
       * Accountability:  Highlight how this reinforces the principle of accountability and consequences for criminal actions.
       * Equal Application:  The current system is applied inconsistently.
  • Call to Action: Urging your state legislators to apply to Congress for a national convention to propose this amendment and urging Congress to support this crucial measure
  • Proposal: No person convicted of a felony, regardless of whether the sentence was served, shall be eligible to hold any office, whether elected or appointed, in the government of the United States, including any office within any department, agency, or instrumentality thereof.  Congress shall have the power to define by appropriate legislation specific disqualifications for specific federal offices. For the purposes of this article, the term 'felony' shall mean any offense punishable by death or imprisonment for more than one year under the laws of the United States or any State.
