The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Grand Blanc, MI respectfully request that the township revise its current ordinance to allow residents to keep a limited number of backyard hens (no roosters) under reasonable guidelines.

Reasons for This Request:

1. Sustainability & Self-Sufficiency- Chickens provide fresh, healthy eggs and allow families to produce their own food, reducing reliance on grocery stores.

2. Educational Benefits- Keeping chickens teaches responsibility, sustainability, and agricultural practices, especially for families with children.

3. Minimal Impact on the Community- Many surrounding townships successfully allow backyard hens with restrictions on flock size, coop placement, and cleanliness.

4. Pest Control & Garden Benefits- Chickens naturally reduce pests like ticks and mosquitoes and provide excellent compost for gardens.

5. Neighbor-Friendly-  Hens are quiet animals (unlike roosters, which we agree should remain restricted) and are far less disruptive than common household pets.

Proposed Guidelines for Backyard Chickens:

Limit of, 4-6hens per household.

No roosters allowed to prevent noise concerns.

Coops must meet cleanliness and setback regulations to ensure they do not disturb neighbors.

Compliance with health and safety codes to prevent nuisances.

By signing this petition, we express our support for updating the township ordinance to allow responsible backyard chicken keeping. We urge the township board to consider this request in line with modern urban farming trends that benefit families and communities.

Thank you,
