Petition to Address Air Pollution in Iloilo City Caused by Jeepneys
The Issue
To the Residents, Commuters, Jeepney Passengers, Youth, and Students of Iloilo City,
We, the undersigned, write to bring attention to the pressing issue of air pollution caused by jeepney vehicles in our city. As one of the most popular modes of public transport in Iloilo, jeepneys are vital to the daily lives of many, but they also contribute significantly to the rising levels of harmful emissions in our air. This issue affects not just the environment but the health and well-being of every resident, commuter, and young person in Iloilo.
Studies show that jeepneys, particularly those running on older engines, emit high levels of particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere. These pollutants are linked to respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and poor air quality. According to a report from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Iloilo City’s air quality has steadily worsened, with transportation emissions being a major contributor.
We propose a shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly solutions such as modernizing jeepneys to electric or hybrid models. We propose a shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, such as modernizing jeepneys to electric or hybrid models, implementing stricter emission standards, and encouraging regular vehicle maintenance to reduce harmful pollutants. By adopting these measures, Iloilo City can significantly improve its air quality, protecting both the environment and the health of its citizens. In cities like Manila and Cebu, efforts to modernize public transportation have already begun, setting a precedent for a cleaner, healthier urban environment.
We urge the residents of Iloilo, especially commuters and the youth, to take a stand and demand action from our local government. Together, we can advocate for cleaner transportation systems that prioritize public health and environmental sustainability. By signing this petition, you are joining a growing movement that seeks to reduce air pollution and secure a healthier future for our city. Please support this cause by adding your signature below and encouraging others to do the same. Let’s make Iloilo a safer, healthier, and more sustainable city for generations to come.
