Petition to add an Indigenous Peoples History Class at Caprock High School

Petition to add an Indigenous Peoples History Class at Caprock High School
The Issue
Here at Caprock High School, we have a student population of ~71% of Latino Students. We also have a Mexican American History Class and an African American History Class, but no Native American History Class. A class to learn about their ancestors before colonization. To learn about their own heritage, from a time not too long ago before the Spaniards came. We should add a Class to teach students about themselves.
Words from the Committee Founder, Melannie Alvarado:
Hi! I’m Melannie Alvarado, some of you might not have heard of me and some of you might not know me at all. For our whole life we were told about the great discoverie of Columbus and how America was formed. We all took Social Studies class for it from 5th grade to now. We learned about the U.S history, African American history but not Native American History. That’s why I'm proposing that the Caprock High School of the AISD District community considers this opportunity.
I’ve taken many courses about the history of the US but I couldn't help but think about the Native American History. At our school it is seen as a unit learning about US History. There is more missing than the fact that the Europeans colonized the Native Land Known as America today. What about the culture that is to be learned? Life before the US. The transition of the Native Americans lives into today. Believe it or not but there is a problem that we are avoiding and is still yet not resolved.
What happened to the Native Americans ? Why are they only known as indigenous people? Why is our school only teaching me what I've already been told since I was 6 years old? Why is it that my curiosity is not being answered that the school promised?
These questions always fill my head and I can't help but be filled with sorrow that our Native American history is not being told. This new generation is filled with new curiosity that is to be answered.
Caprock High School has always had a great community that allowed us to learn more than I knew before. I am grateful for the opportunities that are being given to us everyday but I still have a deep desire to learn something that is being blundered away.
With the opportunity of having a Native American History class it would teach us that “ALL” is to be recognized. The quality of equalness and gratefulness.
71.2 percent of us don’t know they have Native heritages. This is about 1606 people who don’t know their native. Many people with Mexican heritage don’t know they have a Native heritage. They don’t know this because they are not being educated.
When the Spanish conquistadors came to “Turtle Island” or as you know it today America, Native Americans lived here. In order for many to survive they had to learn how to love their one enemy, but what we are missing in the class is the History of the Native Americans.
Did you know that you wouldn't be celebrating “Thanksgiving” or know what gratefulness is without the Native Americans. The Native Americans helped shape the America we know today so why are they not getting recognized?
If you deny creating this a Native American Class as a course can we atleast show greater credit or celebrate our Native Month by celebrating the way you do independence day, Black history month, and your birthday. We deserve to be recognized.
