Petition Description:

We, the concerned citizens of the global community, call for an immediate ban on all international grants and funding to the Shahid Afridi Foundation (SAF) due to its founder’s public support for the Pakistan Army an institution long associated with cross-border terrorism and violence.

Shahid Afridi, a former cricketer and head of SAF, has been supporting Pakistani Army while Pak Army has been funding, equipping, recruiting terror groups. Mr. Afridi publicly wearing military uniform and aligning himself with Pakistan’s armed forces. This public endorsement comes at a time when India has directly accused the Pakistan Army of involvement in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir on April 22,  2024, which led to the tragic deaths of innocent civilians.

Afridi’s open allegiance to the Pakistan Army makes it clear: his foundation is not politically neutral. This violates the basic principles of international humanitarian work.

More broadly, the Pakistan Army has a long-standing history of involvement in regional terrorism, including in Afghanistan, where state-sponsored militancy has devastated communities for decades. The misuse of nonprofit platforms to promote or legitimize military-linked agendas poses a threat to regional peace and violates global norms.

International donors and humanitarian aid organizations are bound by international law and standards, including:

• Article 1(3) of the UN Charter, which upholds international peace and security and promotes respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

• Article 71 of the UN Charter, which governs the relationship between the UN and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), emphasizing the importance of political neutrality.

• UN ECOSOC Resolution 1996/31, which sets the framework for NGO consultative status and requires NGOs to be aligned with the principles and purposes of the United Nations.

• UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which call on all entities including nonprofits to avoid complicity in human rights abuses.

We therefore urge:

• All international donors to immediately suspend financial support to SAF

• Governments and funding agencies to investigate the foundation’s affiliations

• Global enforcement of nonprofit accountability mechanisms to prevent misuse of aid

Humanitarian aid must be a force for peace, not propaganda.

Sign this petition to help protect the integrity of international aid and to stop the funding of organizations linked to violence and political extremism.
