As a mother with a child and young family members who use TikTok, there is an urgent need for better reporting features to allow users to report inappropriate filters and effects directly. This issue touches me deeply because these elements can inflict irreversible trauma and damage to young minds using the app. Disturbingly, adult graphic content should have no place on TikTok, neither in videos nor in filters and effects.

Despite raising awareness about this critical issue, my account was unjustly banned, and I'm not alone in experiencing this censorship. Many concerned users have faced similar reprimands for merely pointing out the inadequacies of TikTok's current reporting system.

Currently, there's no mechanism to directly report inappropriate filters or effects, meaning that these potentially harmful features can proliferate unchecked. When issues arise, only the videos using such filters can be flagged—not the filters themselves. This reactive approach fails to address problems at their root, allowing harmful content to persist and leaving users vulnerable to inappropriate material.

We propose that TikTok implements a reporting feature specifically for filters and effects. This proactive measure would empower users to help maintain a safer space by identifying and eliminating problematic content at its source.

A shift towards a more user-centered, responsible content platform is overdue. TikTok must listen to its community and enact these necessary changes to safeguard its millions of users, particularly the young and impressionable.
