The Issue

The off-leash dog park we request is bounded naturally on three sides by: the steep hill with trees that runs next to Tudor Arms (street), trees and hills at the top and bottom of the field, and a proposed barrier (to be built) between the field and the Stoney Run.

The lower field of Wyman Park has been used as an off-leash dog park for nearly 30 years. During that time, a substantial community of dog owners has grown, making the lower field an exceptional hub of activity and recreation, and an exemplar of community and community engagement.

The Friends of Wyman Park Lower Field was formed from this community to serve as stewards of an officially recognized dog park and work with the Baltimore Department of Recreation  to manage it. We are members of the surrounding communities. We already do our best every day to keep the park a safe and pleasant place for all to enjoy. And a few of us have protected, cleaned up, maintained, and loved the Lower Field as an unofficial, off-leash dog park for nearly 25 years.

A recent survey with 633 respondents demonstrates how important an off-leash dog park on the lower field of Wyman Park is to the community and the city, as well as the keen community interest in establishing this off-leash dog park now. Sixty-three percent (63%) of the survey respondents use the lower field daily, almost daily, or every week. They account for 97% of all visits to the lower field each week- an estimated 1747 visits per week.

Seventy percent of these visitors (70.7%) want the lower field to remain an off-leash dog park bounded by a partial barrier or completely unfenced. We believe that establishing an off-leash dog park with a partial barrier that separates the dog park from the Stoney Run Trail will greatly benefit the community. By signing the petition below, we express our support for this initiative and our commitment to ensuring the success of the park.
