Protect Japan's Bears

Japan is expanding its bear culling policy.

This is not limited to bears that enter towns or come into conflict with people.

Under spring bear culling programs, hunters enter mountain habitats to locate and kill bears during and after hibernation. Mother bears and their cubs are among those at risk.

When a mother bear is killed, her cubs are often left with little chance of survival. Entire bear families are being destroyed in the forests where they naturally belong.

Bears are an essential part of Japan's ecosystem. They help maintain healthy forests and biodiversity. Killing them in increasing numbers threatens the balance of nature and ignores humane alternatives.

Many countries are investing in coexistence strategies, habitat protection, public education, electric fencing, bear-resistant waste management, and other non-lethal wildlife management measures. Japan should do the same.

We call on the Government of Japan and the Ministry of the Environment to halt the expansion of bear culling programs and invest in humane coexistence measures instead.

Mother bears and cubs deserve protection, not extermination.

日本のクマたちを守るために

日本では今、クマ被害対策の名のもとに、山の中へ入り、母グマや子グマを含むクマの駆除が拡大されています。

これは人里に現れた個体への対応だけではありません。

春季管理捕獲では、クマたちが本来暮らしている山へ人間が入り、冬眠中または冬眠明けのクマを捕獲・殺処分します。母グマや子グマもその対象となっています。

母グマが殺されれば、残された子グマたちの生存は極めて困難になります。今、多くのクマの家族が本来暮らす森の中で失われています。

クマは日本の森林生態系に欠かせない存在です。森林の健全性や生物多様性を支える重要な野生動物です。しかし、駆除の拡大は自然のバランスを損ない、人道的な代替策を軽視するものです。

海外では、人とクマの衝突を減らすために、電気柵の設置、クマが寄りつかないゴミ管理、果樹や放置された食料の管理、生息地の保全、住民教育など、共存を目指す取り組みが進められています。

私たちは、命を奪うことを前提とした政策ではなく、世界で実践されている共存の取り組みを日本でも本格的に進めるべきだと考えます。

母グマも子グマも、生きるために山で暮らしています。

共存のための方法は、駆除以外にもあります。
