Maple Ridge is in dire need of a treatment and recovery center. There is a large population living here who are homeless and addicted to drugs. Without a new treatment center being built the number of deaths from overdose will continue to rise and the number of homeless addicts will also continue to rise. Crime is also on the rise, and without this center available the social and economic costs to residents and businesses will also increase as crime increases.  

       The provincial government is in a position to fund such a center. The people of Maple Ridge must voice their desire to have such a center funded by the province. The stakes are too high not to have this center built. If this center is not built, Maple Ridge will be in the untenable position of having to fund the consequences of increased crime and paying for increased social services, while businesses and residents move out of the area and leave the city with fewer resources.

We the undersigned, petition Mayor and Council of the City of Maple Ridge as follows:

We, the citizens of Maple Ridge, demand that the province of BC provide funding for a modern, state-of-the-art drug and alcohol treatment center for the city of Maple Ridge. After successive provincial governments have promised funding for treatment centers throughout the province, we are asking the BC government to finally come through on its promise to provide such funding to Maple Ridge.
This treatment center will be staffed by certified drug and alcohol treatment counsellors, nurses, and doctors. It will be equipped for providing long-term recovery using current best practices. The conditions to be met for receiving treatment, expectations while in treatment, and modalities of treatment used will be under the purview of the municipality of Maple Ridge. This will be a zero-tolerance facility and will be large enough to meet the needs of Maple Ridge. Bed utilization priority will be given to those individuals living in Maple Ridge. The location for this facility to be built will be decided upon by the municipality of Maple Ridge. The conditions requested for this facility cannot be altered without the express consent from the mayor and council of Maple Ridge. Necessary funding for this facility will continue into perpetuity from the government of BC.
