The Issue

The Issue
Residents of Cortland Druid Hills (formerly Elme Druid Hills) are being charged a mandatory $65 monthly fee for internet service through Elauwit, regardless of whether we want or use this service. This policy forces tenants to pay for a service many of us neither requested nor find satisfactory.

Why This Policy Is Problematic
Financial Burden Without Choice

  • The mandatory $65 monthly fee adds $780 annually to our housing costs
  • Many residents already have internet contracts with other providers
  • This creates double-payment situations and unnecessary financial strain
  • No opt-out option is provided, even for residents who don't need internet service

Service Quality Concerns

  • Elauwit has a 1.5-star Google rating based on customer reviews
  • The company lacks Better Business Bureau accreditation
  • Residents report frequent outages and poor customer support
  • Many tenants prefer established providers with better track records

Legal and Ethical Considerations

  • Georgia tenant rights support consumer choice in service providers
  • Bundling services without clear disclosure may violate consumer protection standards
  • This practice eliminates healthy market competition
  • Residents should have the right to choose services that meet their individual needs

Our Reasonable Request
We ask Cortland Druid Hills to:

  1. Make the internet service optional - Allow residents to opt out of the Elauwit service and associated fees
  2. Provide transparency - Clearly disclose any bulk service agreements and how they benefit residents
  3. Respect tenant choice - Allow residents to select their preferred internet providers
  4. Grandfather existing contracts - Exempt residents with current internet service agreements from this fee

Alternative Solutions

  1. Offer the bulk internet service as an opt-in amenity at a discounted rate
  2. Partner with multiple internet providers to give residents choice while maintaining bulk pricing
  3. Apply the service only to new leases with clear disclosure during signing
  4. Provide a credit system for residents who demonstrate existing internet service

Why This Matters
This petition represents residents who value fair housing practices, consumer choice, and transparent management policies. We appreciate Cortland Druid Hills' efforts to enhance our living experience but believe this can be achieved while respecting tenant autonomy and financial circumstances. We are not opposing improved internet access - we are requesting the freedom to choose how we obtain it.

By signing, I support making the internet service optional and restoring resident choice in service providers at Cortland Druid Hills.
