The Issue

The undersigned students and future residents of West Village A write this petition to express their formal concern about the recent decision which changed the apartment layout from four private bedrooms that accommodate one resident each to a six-person occupancy model that uses three bedrooms with two residents per bedroom and a shared desk/study room.

The original living conditions which  students selected through their planning and budgeting have been completely changed by this modification. West Village A built its appeal through its private-bedroom design which enables students to succeed academically while maintaining their personal well-being and creating a harmonious living space.

Key Concerns:

Academic Impact
The shift to shared bedrooms reduces access to quiet personal study spaces. The situation becomes more critical because students need private study spaces to meet their academic requirements.

Health and Well-Being
The presence of two extra residents in a unit which already has four occupants will create problems because they will have to share space with their new roommates. Shared bedrooms create difficulties for people because they need to handle three specific matters which include control over their personal space and the ability to follow their own schedule and handle their daily activities.

Expectation vs. Reality
Many students selected West Village A because of its original four-bedroom design. The changes to the arrangement which occurred after decisions were made resulted in a loss of trust while creating challenges for students who had to choose between few options.

Space and Resource Strain
Common areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces were designed with fewer occupants in mind. Increasing density may lead to overcrowding and reduced quality of life.

Fairness and Transparency
Students deserve clear and consistent housing information. Significant changes like this should involve student input and provide options for those who no longer wish to live under the new conditions.

Our Requests:

Reconsider the decision to convert West Village A units to six-person occupancy.
Offer affected students the option to remain in a four-bedroom configuration where possible.
Provide alternative housing options of equal value and quality for those who do not wish to live in the revised setup.
Increase transparency and communication regarding housing changes moving forward.

The housing and transportation difficulties which affect decision-making are understood by us but we believe that student well-being and academic performance as well as institutional trust should be prioritized above everything else.

We ask Texas Tech Housing & Residence Life to examine this decision again while they work together with students to develop an equitable solution.

Sincerely,

The students of Texas Tech University
