PETITION: People Are Dying Waiting for Help -This Must End Now
The Issue
A country cannot call itself "compassionate" while people die waiting for help.
Yet this is what is happening in Greece today.
Every day, individuals fighting addiction do the hardest, bravest thing they can do:
They ask for help.
And every day, the system answers with silence.
No available detox beds.
No accessible rehabilitation programs.
No mental-health support.
No outreach teams.
No safe housing.
People who are ready to recover, are told to wait months for treatment they may not survive long enough to receive.
This isn’t a crisis of personal failure. It is a crisis of public responsibility.
THE REALITY WE CAN NO LONGER IGNORE:
State detox units operate far beyond capacity. Rehabilitation programs are too few, too far apart, and too expensive for many. Homeless, uninsured, and undocumented individuals are routinely turned away. Mental-health services for trauma, anxiety, and depression -conditions closely tied to addiction- are almost nonexistent. Outreach teams are understaffed, underfunded, and unable to reach the people who need them most. People are not refusing treatment. Treatment is refusing them.
This is a preventable crisis.
But only if we act.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR:
We call on the Greek Government and the Ministry of Health to implement a humane, modern, evidence-based national response that includes:
1. Accessible, state-funded detox centers across the country
Immediate, barrier-free entry -no insurance, no paperwork, no months-long delays.
2. Substantial expansion of rehabilitation programs
Enough capacity to meet the real needs of the population.
3. Long-term reintegration services
Housing, job training, psychological support, and community reintegration -the foundations of sustainable recovery.
4. Mobile outreach teams
Professionals who can meet people where they are and guide them safely into care.
5. Integrated mental-health treatment
Addiction and mental health cannot be separated. Care must address both.
6. Safe transitional housing for people in recovery
Stability is not optional. It is the bridge between treatment and a new beginning.
WHY THIS MATTERS -FOR ALL OF US:
Addiction touches every community. It affects families, neighborhoods, workplaces, schools. It crosses every demographic, every economic level, every age group.
Supporting recovery:
Saves lives
Reduces crime
Lightens the burden on hospitals and emergency services
Strengthens families
Creates safer, healthier communities
We all benefit when people are given the chance to rebuild their lives.
Greece has the knowledge, the expertise, and the heart to do this.
What it needs now is action.
WHAT WE BELIEVE:
Recovery is a human right.
No one should be denied treatment because of poverty, homelessness, or lack of insurance.
Addiction is a health issue, not a moral failure.
Lives should not be lost waiting for care that should be available to all.
A country is defined by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens.
We choose compassion.
We choose dignity.
We choose action.
SIGN THIS PETITION IF YOU BELIEVE:
That every person deserves a real chance to recover
That Greece must invest in a modern, accessible addiction treatment system
That no one should die because treatment wasn’t available
That change is possible -and overdue
Together, we can push for a system where help is reachable, recovery is possible, and no one is left behind.
Let’s build a Greece where people don’t lose their lives waiting for help -a Greece that chooses healing over neglect.
