The Issue
Petition Opposing Construction of the Proposed 175-Foot Telecommunications Tower Near Keener Lane
We, the undersigned residents, families, and property owners of Harrison and Boone County, respectfully petition the reviewing authorities to deny approval for the proposed 175-foot telecommunications tower near 3859-UT Keener Lane.
While we understand the value of improved communication infrastructure, this particular location is inappropriate and creates unnecessary risks and negative impacts for our community. Our objections are as follows:
1. Dangerous Blind Intersection and Increased Safety Risks
The proposed tower site is located directly beside an already dangerous blind intersection. This area has limited visibility and a history of close calls for residents who enter or exit the roadway.
The presence of a large industrial structure, construction equipment, service vehicles, and additional signage in this area would introduce new distractions, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
A blind intersection is not an appropriate place to add any structure or activity that draws drivers’ attention away from the road.
2. Proximity to an Equine Therapy Facility Serving Special-Needs Children and Veterans
This tower would be built right beside a local equine therapy center, a facility that provides essential therapeutic services to special-needs children, individuals with disabilities, and military veterans.
These programs rely on a calm, quiet, low-stress environment.
The introduction of heavy equipment, ongoing maintenance traffic, lighting, and visual disturbance threatens the therapeutic integrity of the facility.
Any disruption could negatively affect the wellbeing of the vulnerable individuals who depend on this program.
This facility is an invaluable community resource and must be protected from unnecessary disturbance.
3. Reduction of Property Values
Numerous studies and real-estate assessments indicate that large telecommunications towers placed close to residential properties can lead to significant drops in property values. Our neighborhood consists of homeowners who have invested greatly in their homes and property. This tower would jeopardize those investments.
4. Health and Environmental Concerns
Residents remain concerned about potential long-term health effects associated with telecommunications towers. While research continues, it is widely recognized that many prefer these structures be placed at a safe distance from homes, schools, and therapeutic facilities. The community deserves caution and prudence in the siting of such structures.
5. Loss of Scenic View and Neighborhood Character
The rural landscape and scenic views are vital to the character and appeal of our community. A 175-foot tower, FAA lighting, and associated industrial structures would create a permanent visual intrusion and diminish the peaceful, natural environment residents and therapy clients rely on.
6. Increased Traffic Congestion
Construction vehicles, routine maintenance trucks, and technician visits will add regular traffic to a road not designed for such load. Given the blind intersection and limited road width, additional congestion presents a substantial public safety hazard.
7. Availability of More Suitable Alternative Locations
The community strongly encourages the applicant and reviewing authorities to consider alternative placement options that achieve needed coverage without negatively impacting residential areas, therapy facilities, or road safety.
Conclusion
For these reasons, we respectfully request that the proposed telecommunications tower near Keener Lane be denied. We urge decision-makers to prioritize the safety, health, property values, and wellbeing of local residents—and to protect the essential services provided by the nearby equine therapy facility for special-needs children and veterans.
