Support the Community Movement Commons

Support the Community Movement Commons
The Issue
The Community Movement Commons (CMC) is a new building on 14 Winthrop in Roxbury that will hold five community organizations dedicated to empowering the people in their neighborhoods. Later this Fall, CMC will go before the Zoning Board of Appeals to get approval. In order to ensure this dream comes to life, the CMC team is connecting with supporters to sign the following letter to the ZBA and the BPDA:
We are writing to express our enthusiastic support for the Community Space, Shared Office Space, and Birth Center, proposed by Community Movement Commons (CMC). This transformative project, to be constructed at 14 Winthrop St. and 23 Kearsarge Ave. Roxbury, MA 02119, aims to create an inclusive and empowering community space, a physical home, that will drive positive change in our neighborhood.
For over a decade, movement organizers have dreamed of a community movement space, and now we’re at the beginning of this experiment to create a beautiful vision for our five organizations and the community of Roxbury. We are in support of this team’s proposal for the community-owned commercial space including the core partners: Neighborhood Birth Center, City Life Vida Urbana, Center for Economic Democracy, Resist, and the Movement Sustainability Commons. We are aligned with the mission and vision of this team, a black, indigenous, and people of color led initiative.
The CMC holds immense promise in fostering collaboration, dialogue, and grassroots activism. By establishing a physical home for individuals and organizations to come together, share knowledge, and work towards common goals, Community Movement Commons is building a vibrant network that will amplify the impact of local initiatives and inspire social transformation.
We recognize the significance of this project in creating access to unique community space that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the City of Boston: A place for birthing families focused on black maternal healthcare outcomes, a place for long term stability for homeowners and renters, a place for workplace ownership opportunities, a place for foundation and grant support for grassroots organizations, and a place for ongoing business support of grassroots organizations.
Community Movement Commons' commitment to creating an open and accessible space where diverse voices are heard and valued sets an inspiring example for other neighborhoods striving for inclusivity and empowerment. We strongly support this project as it will bring organizers, movement workers, community members, midwives, and healers together under one roof.
As residents of Roxbury and the surrounding neighborhoods, we firmly believe that the CMC will enhance our neighborhood and contribute to its overall well-being. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this transformative initiative and lend our support to its success.
