Petition Keyshia Cole As A Reminder That Black Is Beautiful
The Issue
Keyshia Cole recently made a televised appearance stating that she was "skeptical" about being a part of the Black Girls Rock organization because she's "biracial". This is disturbing because Keyshia's mother is black and Keyshia doesn't even know who her father is.
Here's the comment Keyshia made:
“I’m Bi-racial but it’s ok…I’m Black, I’m Black.. At first I was skeptical about being a part of the Black Girls Rock organization but then when I read on it and I realized how strengthening it is for our black women and women in general – how strengthening it is for us to come together and understand that no matter what, we rock.“
“I just think it’s a beautiful organization and I’m so happy to be a part of it.”
Through out her entire life she has only identified with African Americans. Keyshia was adopted by a black woman, raised with a black family, lived in a black neighborhood and went to a black school. Why would she ever become skeptical about being a part of an organization like Black Girls Rock, especially when it's titled, Black Girls Rock?
Keyshia’s mother Frankie is a recovering drug addict who gave Keyshia up for adoption. Frankie has said on their reality TV show that she had a one time encounter with a white man who she believes is Keyshia’s father, but paternity was never proven. It’s safe to assume Frankie only thinks this because of Keyshia’s complexion, but the fact is black people produce all complexions. The two biggest misconceptions are, “light skinned blacks are mixed” and “everyone in America is mixed”.
Keyshia's comment was offense and showcased a tremendous level of self hate. Her next album needs to be petitioned because her core audience is black women. Her comment made it clear that she does not appreciate the people who have supported her career. So, why continue to do so?
