The issue

We, the undersigned members of the Glenferrie Primary School community, call on the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments to urgently address critical infrastructure needs at Glenferrie Primary School.

As a 150-year-old public school, Glenferrie Primary has a proud history of educating generations of students. However, several key areas of the school are now in urgent need of renewal to ensure students continue to learn in a safe, modern, and supportive environment.

We are particularly concerned about the following priority areas:

  • Outdoor safety and shade: There is currently inadequate shaded outdoor space for children, exposing students to heat and limiting safe use of outdoor learning and play areas.
  • Playground and oval condition: Uneven playing fields, including tree root damage, are contributing to unsafe surfaces and have resulted in accidents and near misses.
  • Toilet facilities: Existing toilet blocks date back to the 1960s and are no longer fit for purpose, with some students actively avoiding their use.
  • Two main heritage listed buildings: Key learning and administration spaces require refurbishment, including issues such as wall cracking, deteriorating paintwork, and poor thermal comfort, with buildings becoming very cold in winter.

We believe these conditions do not reflect the standards expected of a contemporary public school and present both safety and wellbeing concerns for students and staff.

We therefore call for:

  • Urgent identification and allocation of funding for infrastructure upgrades at Glenferrie Primary School.
  • Renewal of ageing facilities to meet modern safety, accessibility, and learning standards.
  • Investment in safe outdoor learning environments, including shade and ground surface improvements.
  • A fair and equitable approach to public school infrastructure funding that ensures long-established schools are not left behind.

By signing this petition, we are asking decision-makers to act with urgency to ensure Glenferrie Primary School remains a safe, inclusive, and high-quality learning environment for all students.
