Petition for Updated Dress Code at Westminster Christian Academy

We, the students of Westminster, believe that our dress code should reflect not only the values of our Christian education but also our individuality, comfort, and ability to express ourselves while maintaining respect for the learning environment. We propose the following updates to the dress code, which take into account both modesty and personal expression:

Proposed Changes to the Dress Code:

 1. Leggings as All-Wear
Leggings should be considered acceptable for everyday wear and can be paired with any appropriate patterns. They offer comfort and flexibility, which supports a positive learning experience.
 2. Dresses with Shorts Underneath
Dresses are allowed, but shorts must be worn underneath to ensure modesty while maintaining personal style and comfort.
 3. Tank Tops Allowed with Modesty
Tank tops should be allowed as long as they are not too low cut. This strikes a balance between comfort in warm weather and appropriate attire for a school setting.
 4. Tight-Fitted Clothes for Everyone
All students should feel confident wearing tight-fitted clothes without fear of judgment or inappropriate comments about their body type. This encourages body positivity and inclusivity, aligning with Christian values of kindness and respect for all.
 5. Shoulder Blades Can Be Exposed
Shoulder blades should be allowed to show, provided that no inappropriate parts of the body are visible. This allows students to express their style without crossing boundaries of modesty.
 6. Sweatpants for Comfort and Focus
Sweatpants should be permitted because they provide comfort and flexibility. When students are comfortable, they can focus better on learning, which enhances productivity and reduces distractions. For students involved in physical activities or those with long commutes, sweatpants are practical and appropriate attire.
 7. Band Tees as Expression
Band tees should be allowed as they provide a way for students to express their personal identity and musical interests. This fosters individuality, creativity, and helps build connections with peers who share similar tastes, promoting confidence and comfort within the school environment.
 8. Minimal Ripped Jeans for Style and Comfort
Minimal ripped jeans should be allowed as they provide a stylish yet appropriate option for students who want to express their individuality. They are a practical and fashionable choice that can be paired with various tops for different occasions.
 9. Chains (Without Spikes) on Jeans
Chains should be allowed on jeans as an accessory, provided there are no spikes. Chains offer a subtle way for students to express their personal style without violating safety or modesty standards.
 10. Boys’ Hair Styles
Boys should be allowed to wear their hair long or in a man bun, reflecting personal style and individuality, which are important aspects of self-expression.

Why These Changes are Important:

 • Promote Comfort and Focus: When students feel comfortable in their clothing, they can focus better on their studies. Restrictive or uncomfortable clothing can lead to distractions and hinder the learning process.
 • Encourage Individuality: Allowing students to express their personal style fosters a sense of individuality and self-confidence. In a Christian school, where we are taught to value each person as a unique creation, it’s important that students feel empowered to embrace their identity.
 • Respect Modesty While Promoting Self-Expression: These changes still uphold the value of modesty while giving students the freedom to express themselves. Modesty does not have to be at odds with personal expression, and finding a balance helps create a respectful and welcoming school environment.
 • Support Mental and Emotional Well-Being: A flexible dress code that allows students to feel comfortable and confident in their clothing can contribute to a positive self-image and mental health. When students feel good about how they present themselves, it can reduce anxiety and improve their overall school experience.
 • Reflect Christian Values of Kindness and Acceptance: Our Christian faith teaches us to accept others as they are. By allowing students to dress comfortably and expressively, we are fostering an environment of acceptance and kindness, where students feel seen and respected.

We believe these proposed changes align with the values of our school, and we ask that the administration consider updating the dress code to reflect a more inclusive, comfortable, and respectful environment for all.
