The safety of our borders is of utmost importance to me and many others who care deeply about maintaining the integrity and security of our nation. Recently, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) made a decision to grant temporary residency to 153 Palestinians and reject the Asylum Seekers' registration. This decision came after a previous group, which arrived on the 28th, seemingly bypassed the standard procedures required for asylum registration.

​This move by Dirco has raised significant concerns regarding transparency and adherence to established immigration protocols. This issue is not just about the current group of individuals but speaks to a larger issue of how immigration and asylum procedures are managed in our country. It is crucial that we demand accountability and ensure that such decisions are made with careful consideration of our national laws and the safety of our citizens.

​According to the South African Immigration Act, clear guidelines exist for the processing of asylum seekers, ensuring that each case is evaluated on its merits while also considering the safety and welfare of South African citizens. This process is essential in maintaining our country’s sovereignty and protecting its borders.

​We cannot stand idly by when there is a lack of transparency in these procedures. Not only do we need an explanation for the temporary residency granted to these individuals, but we also need to revisit the circumstances surrounding the prior group. Were the necessary safety checks conducted? Was every individual properly vetted? South Africans have the right to know that their borders are secure.

​Moreover, granting residency without following proper channels may set a concerning precedent that could affect future immigration policies. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to approach this matter with diligence and care.
