The Issue
PETITION FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
Roads: Gore Addition Road & Upper Gore Addition Road
Location: Tornado, West Virginia
We, the undersigned residents and concerned community members, respectfully request that the appropriate road authority conduct a traffic and speed study of Gore Addition Road and Upper Gore Addition Road and evaluate the roads for speed humps, speed bumps, or other appropriate traffic-calming measures.
The posted speed limit on these roads is 25 MPH, but residents regularly observe vehicles traveling at speeds that appear significantly higher than the posted limit. This is especially concerning because these are narrow, one-lane roads, with homes, driveways, children, pedestrians, and animals located along the roadway.
There have been multiple incidents involving vehicles leaving the roadway and entering residents’ ditches. Multiple vehicles have also struck a dumpster located within a resident’s driveway. This is particularly concerning because the driveway is an area where children could be present, creating a serious risk of a vehicle entering a residential area where a child or resident may be standing or playing.
Most recently, a resident’s goat was struck and killed by a vehicle, further demonstrating the serious safety concerns associated with vehicle speeds and vehicles leaving the roadway.
Residents are concerned that without preventative action, the next incident could involve a child, resident, or pedestrian being seriously injured or killed.
We respectfully request that the appropriate authority consider:
A formal traffic and speed study
Evaluation of actual vehicle speeds compared with the posted 25 MPH speed limit
Evaluation for speed humps, speed bumps, or other traffic-calming measures
Review of the existing 25 MPH speed limit and whether additional enforcement or signage is appropriate
Additional warning signs or roadway safety measures
Any other measures recommended by qualified traffic or roadway officials
We understand that any traffic-calming measures must comply with roadway, emergency-access, and engineering requirements. We are asking for the roads to be properly evaluated and for reasonable safety measures to be considered.
The combination of a narrow one-lane roadway, vehicles exceeding the posted 25 MPH speed limit, multiple vehicles entering residents’ ditches, multiple vehicles striking property in residential driveways, and an animal being killed has created a serious and ongoing safety concern for residents.
We believe preventative action is necessary before a similar incident results in serious injury or loss of human life.
We respectfully ask that this matter be investigated and that appropriate traffic-calming and safety measures be considered for Gore Addition Road and Upper Gore Addition Road.
