Petition for the Review of the Presidential Electoral System In Ghana

Petition for the Review of the Presidential Electoral System In Ghana
The Issue
Growing up in Ghana, where vibrant cultures and diverse ethnic groups enrich our nation, I have always been proud of our democratic process. However, as I grew older and became more politically aware, I realized there was a significant flaw in the way our president is elected. The Ashanti and Volta regions seem to play a disproportionate role in determining who holds the highest office in our land. This skew not only undermines the voices of other regions but is inherently unfair.
The current electoral system, which functions similarly to an electoral college, means that the weight of votes from different regions varies significantly. While it's not wrong for certain regions to have a significant voice, it becomes problematic when the rest of the country feels marginalized and underrepresented in matters of national leadership.
Ghana is a tapestry woven from many ethnicities and regions, each contributing equally to the nation's cultural richness and economic progress. Our presidential electoral system should reflect this diversity and ensure that each region's vote carries equal weight. Having regions like Ashanti and Volta sway the election outcome can create regional biases and hinder the spirit of national unity.
An overhaul or at least a review of the current collegiate system is necessary to ensure fair representation. The electoral process must empower the citizens across all regions equally, fostering a sense of inclusivity and fairness consistent with the democratic ideals we espouse.
Logically and statistically, fair representation will encourage more citizens to engage actively in elections, knowing their vote truly matters. It will not only bolster our democracy but also ensure that leaders are elected who have the mandate of the entire nation, not just a few regions. A truly representative electoral process is essential for sustainable peace and development, maintaining the harmony that Ghana is known for.
We call upon the Constitutional Review Committee to take immediate steps to review and, if necessary, alter the current electoral framework. Aligning it more closely with the popular vote will ensure that every citizen's voice is heard and valued.
Please add your signature to help us make a change for a more balanced electoral system in Ghana.
