Petition for the Resignation of Councilor Corey Robinson
We, the concerned citizens of Lowell, Massachusetts, petition for the immediate resignation of Councilor Corey Robinson from his position following serious allegations of sexual assault, domestic assault and battery. While we uphold the principle of "innocent until proven guilty," the gravity of these charges and the expected conduct from an elected official necessitate immediate action.
Expected Conduct from Elected Officials
Elected officials are entrusted with upholding the highest standards of integrity and responsibility. They are expected to embody values of respect, accountability, and non-violence, both in their public and private lives. The alleged conduct of Councilor Robinson is not aligned with these fundamental expectations.
Seriousness of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a deeply concerning issue that affects countless individuals and families.
Data and statistics on domestic violence consistently show that abusers don't conform to a singular stereotype. They can be anyone—friends, neighbors, individuals with long-standing connections. As a community, we must unequivocally stand against such behavior, particularly from those in positions of influence. Any shadow of doubt or suspicion should prompt an elected official to step down from their position out of respect for those affected.
Victims deserve to feel safe, heard, and respected. That should always take precedence over the comfort or position of someone facing serious allegations.
History of Resignations Due to Domestic Violence
- 2017: Riverside Councilman, John Burnard, resigns amid allegations he choked 2 women in Arizona.
- 2018: Meriden Democratic city councilor, Miguel Castro, accused of domestic violence resigns.
- 2022: Des Moines City Council member Anthony Martinelli, resigned from his position for allegations of domestic violence against former partners.
- 2023: Councilman for the Denton County town of Northlake, Wes Boyer, submitted his resignation following his arrest on domestic violence allegations.
- 2023: Casper Mayor Bruce Knell resigned from his position after allegations of domestic violence surfaced in the public sphere.
These instances serve as reminders that elected officials must be held to the highest ethical standards. They must be accountable not only for their policy decisions but also for their personal conduct, especially concerning matters as serious as domestic violence.
We implore Corey Robinson to consider the precedent set by those who have recognized the severity of such allegations and resigned from their positions voluntarily.
