Petition for the Resignation and Replacement of Stephen Lecce as Minister of Education

To: Premier Doug Ford and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

We, the undersigned citizens, parents, educators and concerned individuals, hereby express our deep and urgent concern regarding the continued tenure of Stephen Lecce as the Minister of Education. We firmly believe that his actions and policies have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the principles of inclusivity, fairness, and respect for all student bodies within our educational system.

We are particularly troubled by the following issues:

1. Discrimination Against Certain Student Groups: We believe that Stephen Lecce has shown a clear bias in favor of certain student groups while marginalizing and disregarding the needs, concerns, and safety of others. This discriminatory approach is inexcusable in our education system, which should be grounded in equality and justice.
2. Failure to Encourage Open Dialogue and Inclusivity: A Minister of Education should be a beacon of inclusivity and open dialogue. We feel that Mr. Lecce has failed to create an environment in which diverse perspectives are valued and respected. This failure impedes the development of an educational system that should be welcoming and accepting to all.
3. Lack of Empathy and Support for Palestinian Students: We are deeply concerned that Stephen Lecce has not exhibited any sympathy or expressed support for Palestinian students, nor has he acknowledged the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip. It is essential that all students, regardless of their background, receive the support and understanding they deserve.
4. Creating an Unsafe Environment for Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian Students: By failing to acknowledge and address the specific needs and concerns of Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian students, Mr. Lecce is making it unsafe for these students in the classroom. This lack of empathy and support is detrimental to their educational experience and emotional well-being.

In addition to the above concerns, we must also draw attention to specific incidents that have harmed Muslim students, which Stephen Lecce has failed to acknowledge or address, such as:

• Confirmed reports of hate crimes and harassment against women wearing the hijab in London, Ontario.
• The assault of a 9th-grade Muslim student in Barrie, Ontario, by six students, resulting in head trauma.
• Discovery of "Muslims must die" messages on school bathroom walls and in the lockers of high school students.

Many Muslim and Palestinian parents of school-aged children feel that Islamophobia and discrimination are running rampant and need to be addressed. It is crucial that the Minister of Education is a voice of reason and a champion of inclusivity for all students.

In addition, Stephen Lecce's language, particularly on social media, has been deeply troubling. His response to a comment on one of his Instagram posts with the words "I stand with the civilians murdered by a barbaric genocidal terrorist org. Period" is unacceptable. Such language is divisive and does not reflect the impartiality and empathy that a Minister of Education should embody. Civilians are being murdered on both sides, with close to 4,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza as of the writing of this petition. Not bothering to even mention that is divisive and a blatant disregard to our beliefs in equality for all.

Furthermore, Stephen Lecce's actions and rhetoric are in direct disregard and non-compliance with the Ontario Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative, which aims to address systemic barriers and build diverse and inclusive workplaces with equitable outcomes for all. His approach does not align with the principles of the DEI initiative, and this is deeply concerning.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, urgently request the resignation and replacement of Stephen Lecce as the Minister of Education. We call upon Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take immediate action to appoint a leader who is committed to creating a genuinely inclusive, equitable, and safe educational system where all voices and perspectives, including those of Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students, are heard, valued and respected.

We firmly believe that the future of our education system depends on strong and compassionate leadership. It is our hope that you will consider these concerns and take action to ensure that our students receive a fair and inclusive education, free from all forms of discrimination and prejudice.
