Petition for the Repair and Restoration of the Public Metropolitan Pool in Brooklyn, New York City.

To: Mayor of New York City and City Council Members.

We, the undersigned, residents and patrons of New York City, hereby petition for the urgent repair and restoration of the public Metropolitan Pool located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The Metropolitan Pool has long served as a vital recreational and community space for residents of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and abilities. However, in recent years, lack of maintenance has resulted in significant deterioration of the facility. We believe that the city must take immediate action to address these issues and ensure the longevity and functionality of this important public asset.

Here are some of the key reasons why we are advocating for the repair and restoration of the Metropolitan Pool:

  1. Safety Concerns: The deteriorating infrastructure poses significant safety hazards to the public. Cracked tiles, faulty equipment, dirt, and outdated facilities increase the risk of accidents and injuries. Additionally, the presence of mold, fungus, and other contaminants due to inadequate cleaning and maintenance further compromises the health and safety of pool users.

To address these concerns, the city administration must implement rigorous cleaning and maintenance protocols to ensure the cleanliness and hygiene of the metropolitan Pool. This should include regular inspections, thorough cleaning of all surfaces, and proper ventilation to prevent the growth of mold and other harmful organisms. Furthermore, the city should invest in training staff members on proper cleaning techniques and provide them with the necessary resources and equipment to maintain a safe and sanitary environment for all users.

By prioritizing cleaning and maintenance as part of the repair and restoration efforts, the city can mitigate safety risks and create a healthier and more enjoyable experience for everyone who utilizes the Metropolitan Pool.
  2. Community Health and Well-being: Access to affordable recreational facilities is essential for promoting physical activity and improving public health. A well-maintained pool encourages residents to engage in aquatic exercise, swimming lessons, and recreational swimming, which are vital for overall well-being.

  3. Equality and Accessibility: The Metropolitan Pool plays a crucial role in promoting social inclusion by providing a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together and participate in recreational activities. Ensuring that the pool is fully accessible to people with disabilities is essential for upholding principles of equality and inclusivity.

  4. Economic impact: a vibrant and well-maintained public pool can have positive economic effects on the surrounding community. It can attract visitors, support local businesses, and enhance property values in the area.

  5. Historical and Cultural Significance: the Metropolitan Pool holds historical and cultural significance as a landmark facility in New York City. Preserving its heritage and restoring its grandeur is essential for maintaining the city’s identity and sense of pride.

In light of these reasons, we urge the city administration to allocate the necessary funds and resources for the comprehensive repair and restoration of the Metropolitan Pool. This should include:

  • Repairing structural damages and addressing safety concerns.
  • Upgrading facilities to meet modern standards of accessibility and efficiency.
  • Improving water quality and filtration systems.
  • Enhancing aesthetics and amenities to provide an enjoyable experience for all patrons.

Furthermore, we request transparency and community engagement throughout the process to ensure that the needs and concerns of residents are taken into account. By investing in the repair and restoration of the pool, the city will not only preserve a valuable asset but also demonstrate its commitment to promoting public health, community well-being, and cultural heritage.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust that you will give due consideration to our petition and take prompt action to address the urgent needs of the Metropolitan Pool.

Sincerely,

Elena Bermúdez de Castro Laborde
