Petition for the Removal of Hezbollah Content from Wikipedia

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate removal of Hezbollah and other terrorist organization pages from Wikipedia. These pages serve as a platform for glorification, recruitment, and ideological reinforcement for groups that have been globally recognized as terrorist organizations. Their continued existence on one of the most visited knowledge platforms in the world is not only irresponsible but actively harmful to the safety and security of online users and society as a whole.

Wikipedia is a widely accessible platform that should not be used as a tool to immortalize and legitimize terrorist groups. By allowing detailed pages on Hezbollah and similar organizations, Wikipedia is indirectly supporting their visibility, providing them with a permanent digital presence that can be used to influence public opinion and attract sympathizers. This contradicts global efforts to combat online extremism and undermines the work of intelligence agencies, policymakers, and national security officials.

It is widely known that terrorist groups thrive on notoriety. When they see their organizations detailed on Wikipedia, it reinforces their belief in their invulnerability, as if they are above global restrictions. They take pride in their continued digital presence, believing it signals divine favor or hidden support. This leads to dangerous radicalization and recruitment efforts, especially among vulnerable individuals exposed to online propaganda.

Wikipedia claims to be a neutral knowledge repository, but in this case, it is actively enabling the preservation of terrorist legacies. The volunteers maintaining these pages are, knowingly or unknowingly, aiding and abetting in the continued propagation of terrorist ideologies. Their work helps ensure that these organizations maintain a well-curated and “legitimate” presence online, despite being officially designated as terrorist groups by the United States, the European Union, and multiple international bodies.

Across social media, American-Lebanese and extremist influencers use Wikipedia pages on Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations to validate their extremist narratives. These influencers spread anti-Western, divisive, and even racist rhetoric to their followers. By allowing Wikipedia to remain a resource for such individuals, the platform is indirectly contributing to global disinformation and conflict.

If the individuals maintaining these pages had expertise in internet marketing and digital influence, they would recognize how sinister their role is. By optimizing these Wikipedia pages, they are strategically helping terrorist organizations gain credibility, visibility, and engagement. This digital presence is critical for these groups, as it allows them to maintain a perceived legitimacy even while they are banned or sanctioned worldwide. Wikipedia is unintentionally helping terrorist organizations conduct their operations more effectively by ensuring they remain relevant in the digital age.

We urge Wikipedia and relevant authorities to:

Immediately remove Hezbollah’s Wikipedia page and other terrorist-affiliated pages that contribute to the glorification, recruitment, and operational success of extremist organizations.

Enforce stricter moderation policies regarding pages associated with globally recognized terrorist groups.

Hold Wikipedia moderators accountable for allowing pages that promote, sanitize, or provide neutral ground for terrorist propaganda.

Implement an independent review process to prevent terrorist organizations from benefiting from digital platforms.

It is time to recognize that allowing Hezbollah and other terrorist groups to have Wikipedia pages is not about free speech—it is about public safety and counterterrorism. Wikipedia should not be a resource for violent organizations to maintain their ideological presence and expand their reach. By taking down these pages, we send a clear message: we will not tolerate the digital glorification of terrorism.
