The Issue

To the Honorable Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan; the Honorable Dana Nessel, Attorney General of Michigan; and All Elected Officials of the State of Michigan:

We, the undersigned citizens of Michigan and the United States, urgently call upon you to act in the interest of justice, transparency, and public safety by immediately releasing all state-held records, documents, investigations, and communications related to Jeffrey Epstein's activities, properties, and associations within the State of Michigan.

Recent federal legislation—the Epstein Files Transparency Act (H.R. 4405), signed into law on November 19, 2025—mandates the U.S. Department of Justice to disclose all federal Epstein files within 30 days. This landmark step toward accountability underscores the national imperative to uncover the full scope of Epstein's predatory network, which spanned decades and exploited vulnerable individuals, including minors.

Michigan holds a direct connection to this scandal. Epstein funded and frequented the Jeffrey Epstein Scholarship Lodge (now renamed) at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Grand Traverse County—a prestigious institution for young performers where he donated significantly and visited multiple times. Court testimony from the Ghislaine Maxwell trial revealed that Epstein and Maxwell recruited underage girls at Interlochen in the early 1990s, raising grave concerns about potential state-level oversights, unreported incidents, or investigations during his time in Michigan.

As stewards of public trust, the State of Michigan possesses records that may include:

  • Property deeds, tax filings, and ownership details for Epstein's Michigan assets.
Law enforcement reports from the Michigan State Police or local agencies regarding Epstein's visits or any complaints.
  • Communications between state officials and federal authorities on Epstein-related matters.
  • Educational or institutional records from Interlochen or other Michigan entities that received Epstein's funding.

The withholding of these files perpetuates a culture of secrecy that shields powerful individuals from scrutiny and denies survivors the validation they deserve. Michigan's commitment to protecting children and combating human trafficking—evident in laws like the Michigan Human Trafficking Act—demands that we lead by example, not lag behind federal action.

We petition you to:

  1. Direct the Michigan Attorney General's Office and relevant state agencies (including the Department of Attorney General, Michigan State Police, and Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs) to compile and publicly release all non-redacted Epstein-related records within 14 days.
  2. Establish an independent review panel, including survivors' advocates and transparency experts, to oversee the release and redact only what is legally required for victim privacy.
  3. Commit to legislative reforms ensuring future scandals of this magnitude trigger automatic state-level disclosures.

Transparency is not optional; it is the foundation of democracy. By releasing these files, Michigan can honor the victims, deter future abuses, and reaffirm our state's values of justice and accountability.

We urge you to respond to this petition within 30 days and take immediate action. Signatures will be delivered to your offices via certified mail and public advocacy channels.
